I love staying in hotels. It doesn’t matter if it’s a Premier Inn or a Travelodge at a service station, there’s just something about a trouser press & a lukewarm buffet breakfast with tiny glasses of juice that really gets me going! So you can only imagine my excitement when, on our visit to Paris in February, we stayed in the most BEAUTIFUL HOTEL I’VE EVER SEEN.
Designed by Philippe Maidenberg of Maidenberg Architecture, the Hotel Joke in Montmartre is upbeat, vibrant & whimsical in equal measures. It’s full of surprises (and Instagram opportunities, obvs!), and each room is a little different, but with the same contemporary ‘topsy turvy’ feel. Bursting with candy colours, childhood nostalgia & silly genius, it’s a refreshingly lighthearted place to relax & unwind after a busy day in Paris.
Montmartre has always been my favourite district of Paris, with gorgeous cafes & independent shops at every turn, the famous ‘artist’s corner’, highly entertaining sex shops & museums, and – of course – the beautiful Moulin Rouge. In fact, the Moulin Rouge was literally a 2 minute walk from the hotel! Montmartre has a distinctly bohemian vibe, a bit like Brighton really, which probably explains why I love it so much. With its fun-loving & innocent vibes, the Hotel Joke is a strange juxtaposition to the district outside, but that just makes it even more delightful!
Perhaps surprisingly, I actually found the Hotel Joke whilst looking for a cheap deal, and it was incredibly reasonable at just 80 Euros for the night including breakfast, free drinks in the room & a free buffet throughout the day. OH, and there are 15 other ‘sister’ hotels dotted around Paris, and we had access to their free buffets too! Magical! No wonder it’s been voted Paris’ 11th best hotel on TripAdvisor. The staff were fantastically helpful, bright & happy at all hours of the day and night, and no one batted an eyelid at the fact that we are a same sex couple (sadly we still have to check things like this before we travel, and do get worried sometimes!).
I genuinely can’t rate the Hotel Joke highly enough for a visit to Paris. Whether you stay for 1 night or a whole week, whether you’ve got young children or are on a romantic couples’ retreat, it really has got something for everyone. Thank you, Hotel Joke!
